Believe it or not, SPRING is here!.

Updated: Feb 12, 2019

With that being said, baseball season is right around the corner.  There is just something about the roar of the Fenway Faithful, the smell of Italian Sausages on Yawkey Way, and enjoying a large box of crackerjacks. With that I feel it is important to touch base (no pun intended) on common baseball injuries.

What are the most common baseball injuries?

The most common injuries you will see with baseball are Rotator Cuff Strains/Injuries, Low Back injuries, Tommy John and Knee/Ankle injuries.

Rotator Cuff Injuries- With repetitive throwing at a high level Rotator Cuff is often injured during baseball season. Factors that can lead to injury are: fatigue, and poor throwing mechanics.

Low Back Injuries- Lower Back Injuries are common among those who take a lot of swings and also forceful swings. With a good hitting coach and proper technique these can be avoided, however too often players tend to rotate and relax abdominal muscles leading to strain.

Tommy John- Probably the most common baseball injury, it is an injury to the elbow. The injury occurs with high reps throwing and poor form affected the ulnar collateral ligament. The ulnar collateral ligament helps provide stability to the elbow and is located throughout the inside of elbow.

Knee/Ankle Injuries- These are common due to running on uneven surfaces and more so with sliding into the bases. Common baseball injuries of the knee/ankle include but are not limited to: sprains, meniscus tears, Achilles injuries, and ligament tears.

If I have these how do I treat it?

Although these injuries all have a different severity and treatment programs they can be treated conservatively by a Physical Therapist. Physical Therapists are trained healthcare professionals who can diagnose your injury and treat your injury.  If the damage is severe it may require other medical intervention/surgery. If you or someone you know has any of these baseball injuries consult your local Physical Therapist!
