Boston Red Sox World Series victory today - lets discuss one of the most common injuries..

Updated: Feb 12, 2019

Tommy Johns Surgery

What Is It?

The surgery itself is named after former player... Tommy John. The injury itself is damage to the Ulnar Collateral Ligament or UCL. Most commonly seen in college and pro athletes the damage or injury comes from result of repetitive stress/use.

Whats the Surgery?

Tommy John Surgery is a procedure where the injured ligament is replaced via an orthopedic surgeon with another tendon taken from somewhere else in the human body.

How Long Is The Recovery?

For the most part treatment takes up to 1 year and in some cases even longer. Especially with athletes who want to return to previous level of function. It's a slow delicate process and usually goes in phases.

Phase I: Elbow is Immobilized for 7-10 days and then focus is on gentle ROM.

Phase II: Usually starts 6 weeks post surgery and at this time patients can start performing strengthening activities for elbow but are educated on importance of limiting overuse.

Phase III: Final stage of the process this is usually 4-5 months post op and has emphasis on sports related activities to normalize function.
