Physical Therapy for Running

Updated: Feb 12, 2019

It's that time of year again.... Boston Marathon! As most runners prepare for one of the biggest challenges they have ever faced, we look into common injuries and the physical therapy course of treatment for such injuries.

Shin Splints-A common injury among runners who are new to the sport or not conditioning to perform long distance running. This condition affects the front lower leg and is aggravated by impact. Best course of treatment is rest or low impact activities such as: swimming/biking. Ice is a great treatment technique for inflammation/pain control.

Achilles Tendinitis- Overuse injury to the Achilles Tendon which connects the heel to the muscles of the lower leg. Runners with muscle imbalances such as weakness in posterior/extensor muscle groups are at a higher risk. Again Ice is important for inflammation/pain control but also anti-inflammatory. In certain cases, calf muscle stretching/strengthening as well as modalities such as : US and Massage have proven to help treat the condition.

- Commonly referred to as "runner's knee"  this syndrome is known for the pain under/around the knee cap(patella). Usually caused by irritation of the cartilage around the knee cap, due to poor mechanics of knee cap movement. Common treatments are Ice, Anti- Inflammatory and also general leg strengthening especially in quadriceps muscle group. For those with poor joint mechanics taping can be used to try and re-educate the muscles of the knee to avoid future damage/pain.

IT(iliotibial) Band Syndrome- The IT Band is thick connective tissue ranging from the outside of the hip to the knee. Pain with ITB syndrome can be felt anywhere along the path of this connective tissue. Multiple factors can cause this syndrome from: muscle weakness, overuse, bowed legs, leg length discrepancy and increased hip internal rotation.

So, keep in mind strength/flexibility is important when performing your training/marathons. If you shall develop or have felt any of the syndromes listed above always consult your local Physical Therapist to receive treatment to return you to your training program as pain free as possible.
